Flute Pedagogy Philosophy
With my teaching, I hope to create a warm and supportive environment where students feel encouraged to practice their craft, develop a better understanding of music as a whole, and gain skills that can be applied beyond the flute. I am committed to my own continuous professional development and growth as an educator, and I am always striving to improve my teaching practice. I constantly learn from my students, my peers, and my own mentors, and I aim to apply the most effective and inspirational concepts in my own teachings. I look forward to working with students of all ages and abilities and being a part of their flute and musical journeys!
The purpose of music education goes far beyond learning the technical skills that each instrument requires, but it also involves learning how music works and how an individual can communicate their musical ideas through the flute itself. In my studio, students will have certain learning objectives and milestones, all of which are molded to fit their specific goals as flutists and musicians. A student who wants to study music in college will have different musical goals than an individual who is continuing their flute journey from decades prior.
Some of these learning objectives include:
-
Reading musical notation
-
Learn how to practice
-
Learning technical exercises to gain control of the instrument
-
Gaining audition skills and tips
-
Sight-reading practice and skills
-
Understanding music theory
-
Playing solo pieces
-
Learning about flute repertoire across genres
As a music theorist, understanding music and learning about the repertoire is a very important aspect of my teaching. I encourage my students to listen to a lot of different repertoire from different genres, ensembles, and areas of the world to develop their ear and learn more about the versatility of the flute. I am also extremely passionate about performing and researching the music of underrepresented composers, and this is a topic I enjoy discussing with my students. I believe that music education is not complete without these musical voices, and it is one of my goals to have students study works that often are underperformed.
Overall, I strive to inspire my students and develop their flute skills, musical knowledge, and professional skills. Together, we will embark on a path of discovery, creativity, and musical excellence.
